What’s Nu at the Religious School
Our 2007-2008 school year is complete, and it
is time to start working on the 2008-2009 school term. In our last bulletin,
I listed the many people that worked hard for our school. I hope that I
included everyone’s name, but if I missed someone, my apologies. Our final
Tzedakah project was Camp to Belong. The students of our school collected
over $300 for this worthy cause. In total…drum roll please…they collected
almost $1200. Thank you to the students and their parents for making this
happen. Speaking of making things happen, many thanks to an anonymous donor
who made the closing Midrasha dinner possible. There was no cost to our
Midrasha students, just a basket for donations. This family covered the cost
of the meal. What a wonderful way to complete the Midrasha school year!
It was wonderful to meet our new families
joining our Temple at the Shabbat under the Stars Picnic and Service. I look
forward to having your children join our school. If you have any questions
about our school please contact the Cantor or me at the Temple on a Tuesday
or Thursday throughout the summer.
Parents please note that a new Shabbat
Shalom Club Bulletin Board will be put up this summer. Please check to make
sure that your child’s name is on it. All of the children, 3 year olds
through 6th Grade in our congregation, will have a star with their name
whether they attend our school or not. This is a Shabbat Service incentive.
Each time your child comes to a Shabbat Service- Friday night, Saturday, or
a Havdalah Service, please ask the Cantor for a sticker to place on their
star. If he is not available I will have stickers with me as well. Your
child will honored for good attendance two times during the year. The
Shabbat Shalom Club will begin October 3rd.
Registration for next year is in full
swing; many thanks to the families who have already registered. I hope you
find our new approach easier than filling out the forms each year. Remember
you can make changes to your existing forms in red, or e-mail any changes to
Sheryl.
As always if you have suggestions as we
plan for our next school year, please contact Cantor or me. While doing
summer cleaning if you would like to donate new or gently used games and
activities to use in our snack room this year, that would be appreciated.
And finally, if you would like to be a class parent or would like to help
our PTO in any manner, please contact me.
Enjoy the Summer!

The Holocaust Resource Center
of the Lehigh ValleyThe
Holocaust Resource Center (HRC) of the Lehigh Valley is dedicated to
Holocaust remembrance through education, preservation of primary sources and
outreach to present and future generations in the fight against hatred and

curricula dealing with anti-Semitism, hate crimes, genocide and overcoming
oppression are available to the public. Most materials may be checked out
free of charge. The HRC provides research assistance and a speaker’s bureau
on all of the above subjects. The HRC also helps to assist with workshops
dealing with the Holocaust and tolerance training through the public schools
and coordinates teacher training workshops.
The HRC materials are house primarily at
Temple Beth El Allentown. Materials are available Monday-Friday during

available. If you made a pledge of $10,000 or more ($5000 for single

committing to an additional $125 per seat per year over annual dues. Please contact the synagogue

Please Let us Know!
We Need Your Help
The synagogue is not always
notified when congregants are admitted to the hospital.
HIPAA laws prevent hospitals from
releasing the names of patients.
If you know of a friend or
relative in the hospital, please E-mail or phone the Temple so that the Rabbi and Cantor
will know.
Another way of notifying the Rabbi
or Cantor is to give the hospital our code which is
017. A member of the Temple
staff phones the local hospitals every day to check if any of our members are in.
Our Rabbi and
Cantor also make many visits to members who are in hospitals,
rehabilitation centers or nursing homes. Please notify the temple
office when you or someone you love is in one of these facilities (or is
ill and homebound.)
If you have lost a relative, please
notify the Temple office so you will receive Yahrzeit notification. |

Interfaith Policies
As an egalitarian conservative synagogue, Temple
Beth El warmly welcomes interfaith families.

for more information about our current policies. |
Minyan
The daily minyan is one of the foundations of
our congregation. At morning minyan men and women gather to pray, to hear
Torah read and to recite Kaddish on the Yahrzeit of a beloved one or while
they are in mourning. Friendships grow out of the minyan.
We need 10 people each day to make the minyan.
If you can commit to coming one day a week, more or less often, you will be
performing an important mitzvah.
Minyan meets on weekdays at 7:45 a.m. and
on Sundays and holidays at 9:00 a.m. Come daven with the Rabbi. He’ll be
very happy to see you there. |

The College Connection -
A Must for Every College Student
The goal of the College Connection is to keep in touch with your college
student compliments of the Temple Beth El Sisterhood. Students will receive
3 holiday packages and greetings, a college directory, and a monthly Temple
Beth El bulletin from September through April.
College Connection forms are available in
your August Bulletin or from the Temple.
Many compliments have come to Sisterhood
from the college kids and their parents about our packages. They always
appreciate the goodies, and especially like the fact that each box is
different! They also enjoy getting the bulletin and knowing what is going on
in their Temple at home.
One last thought. This package is totally
supported from our Sisterhood’s budget, with a few generous donations. We do
not charge for this service but we could use some help. When you make
donations to the Temple, remember the College Connection once in a while. In
addition, if you, your employer, or someone you know can donate any items
that might be appropriate to include, please think of us as well. Sisterhood
and the students appreciate your generosity.
Thank you and we hope to see your form
soon and some information about your graduates. |

Social Action
An exciting new committee has formed at Temple

Many little changes add up to big changes. Please help us make a difference.
This committee is off and running with some exciting projects for this
upcoming year. Click here for more
information about the Social Action Committee and how to get involved. |

Provide-a-Ride We are organizing a "Provide-a-Ride" service to help congregants who
wish to attend services on Friday evenings but cannot drive at night.
Many of our older congregants who wish to observe a yahrzeit, or to just
enjoy sharing Shabbat services with their Beth El family, can no longer
drive at night. We are in the process of compiling a roster of
congregants who attend Friday evening services, even if only
occasionally, and would be willing to make it possible for a fellow
congregant to attend with them. Please call the Temple office at
610-435-3521 to register as a driver if you can provide this valuable
service.

Keruv
Keruv means “Bringing Closer.” Another word from
the same Hebrew root (krv) is kerovim, family.
The Temple Beth El Keruv Committee was formed in the fall of 2005 with Henry
Luftman as Chair in order to better address the needs of our interfaith
families. Click here for more detailed
information about this very important Temple effort.
The Keruv Committee warmly welcomes new
members, programming suggestions and feedback on its efforts. We invite you
to contact Henry or Pat Luftman (610-966-0167) or
